The Perfect Man; Myth Or Not?
Exactly a week ago I met with someone who was in “dire” need of relationship advice. While I waited for her to appear, a long list of apprehensions ran through my mind. From the “possibility” that said lass could be a hired gun sent from the future to make little of my existence, to the “impossibility” she could be just a kind and warm lady.I was nervous. It was not as if she was going to be the first person I had ever talked to, but this one had an urgency, a hunger to see me that I had not yet experienced.I like to assess people from the little things other people take for granted. Even though the superficial things like how fashionable or how courteous such a person is count, I pay attention to the less obvious details. So when she finally arrived, I found myself wondering why her nails looked so unkempt. Why was she fidgety Looking here and there? Why was she nervous? We got talking, I ordered cokes and I cracked a few jokes before she relaxed some. It then dawned on me that it was possible that she harboured the same concerns as this writer. Then we got to the matter. In my dealings with people, I prefer to know a bit of background. Your name, where you are from, the type of education you have received; these are things that help in my assessment of a person. So we started with that. In order to be discrete, let’s call her Joy. Joy is part of a Nigerian family she described as “strictly middle class”. She is twenty-nine years old and a masters student at the university. Joy likes to have fun. She is bossy and likes to party, too.Currently, Joy is in a relationship with a man she described as “not attractive enough”. His name is Joel. Joel is a good man. He loves Joy to a fault. He wants a future with her. He is also a hardworking man. He pays his bills and he takes care of her. But Joy does not like the fact that he is short and ugly. But Joy does not like the fact that he is short and ugly. She likes him, but she feels if she waits a bit she would find someone better out there. In fact, there is someone. There is Joseph. Joseph is lazy but he is good looking and Joy prefers to be seen in public with him than with Joel.
